Visit Whitby Abbey car-free

Visit by bus for just £2 each way. Most buses in England are offering £2 Single Fares until 31st December 2024. Our journey planner will show you if your route is included, or you can find a full list of participating operators and routes here.

Enjoy scenic coastal or moorland routes by bus or train to reach Whitby. Whitby Abbey is just ½ mile from the Town Centre, a 15-minute walk up the famous 199 steps – there are resting points on the way up and great views from the top!

The Cleveland Way/England Coast Path passes Whitby Abbey.

There is a taxi rank by Whitby Station, or you can book a taxi from  Abbey Taxis 01947 606666, Jim’s Taxis 07490 007007 or White Rose Taxis 01947 604604.

Enjoy scenic train ride Esk Valley Line or a spectacular bus ride on the Coastliner 840 to Whitby.

The Arriva North East  3 Day ticket is valid on all their services along the North Yorkshire Coast linking Middlesbrough, Whitby and Scarborough.

Transdev buses offer a Daytripper Plus ticket covering all their network in Yorkshire, including Coastliner.

Northern Rail’s Tyne and Tees Day Ranger ticket covers travel from as far north as Morpeth, Hexham and Newcastle to Middlesbrough and the scenic Esk Valley line to Whitby.

Northern Rail also offer a Yorkshire Coast Day Ranger ticket that includes rail travel from Hull to Scarborough and bus X93 from Scarborough to Whitby.
