How to get toWhitby Abbeycar-free

Visit Whitby Abbey car-free

From Whitby railway station, it’s a 15-minute walk up through town to the abbey, including the famous 199 steps. Don’t let these put you off – there are resting points on the way up and great views from the top.

From April to early November, the open-top Whitby Town Tour  stops by the railway station and hourly runs up to the abbey.

There are direct trains to Whitby from as far afield as  Middlesborough, Newcastle, Sunderland and places in between.

You can also arrive in Whitby by bus, for instance on scenic bus 840 all the way from Leeds and York via Malton and Pickering or regular bus X93 from Scarborough.
