It’s quite easy to visit The Hold car-free.
The train station is an about 20-minute walk along the river.
Trains run to Ipswich from: London Liverpool Street (80 mins), Stratford International (75 mins), Shenfield (80 mins), Colchester (20 mins), Bury St Edmunds (30 mins), Norwich (40 mins) and other nearby towns.
Buses run to Ipswich from: Needham Market (30 mins), Stowmarket (45 mins), Felixstowe (45 mins) and other local towns, plus coaches from London.

When you travel by train, an Ipswich PlusBus ticket gives you unlimited travel around the city. Or, find the cheapest bus tickets for you from First Eastern Counties (buses 64, 65, 75, 77 and 88).
Scenic East Suffolk Lines bring you to Ipswich from seaside and country stations with nearby walks. You can listen to an audio tour of the branch from Felixstowe and an audio tour of the branch from Lowestoft.
Scenic Red bus 64 runs to Ipswich from Aldeburgh.

By train
There are direct trains to Ipswich from:
- Suffolk: Stowmarket (10 mins), Needham Market (10 mins), Bury St Edmunds (30 mins) and Newmarket (55 mins). Scenic East Suffolk Lines: Woodbridge (15 mins), Felixstowe (25 mins), Saxmundham (40 mins) and Lowestoft (90 mins).
- East Anglia: Colchester (20 mins), Chelmsford (35 mins), Norwich (40 mins), Ely (55 mins) and Peterborough (95 mins).
- London: Shenfield (60 mins), Stratford (75 mins) and Liverpool Street (80 mins).

Cross the river for an about a 20-minute stroll along the waterfront. You could use the Ipswich walking map– Fore Street is between the quay and university.
Otherwise, head to Stand R2 (sheltered) and take Ipswich Buses bus 12 or bus 13 ‘Chantry Connexions’ for 5 minutes to Old Cattle Market bus station (sheltered). Then take a bus from ‘Outside Revolution‘ to Fore Street, which takes a couple of minutes.

By bus from other towns
There are direct buses to Ipswich, mostly operated by First Eastern Counties from:
- Frequent: Felixstowe (45 mins, bus 75 and bus 77), Needham Market (30 mins, bus 88) and Stowmarket (45 mins, bus 88).
- Regular: Aldeburgh (105 mins, bus 64 and bus 65), Hadleigh (35 mins, Beestons bus 91), Leiston (90 mins, bus 64 and bus 65), Saxmundham (75 mins, bus 64) and Woodbridge (35 mins, bus 64 and bus 65).
There are direct coaches to Ipswich from London: Stansted (2 hrs, coach 717).
From Ipswich Old Cattle Market bus station (sheltered), it’s about a 10 minute stroll to The Hold.
Otherwise, take a bus from ‘Outside Revolution‘ to Fore Street, which takes a couple of minutes.

About The Hold
Located in Ipswich's Waterfront, The Hold is a fully accessible building that houses the majority of Suffolk's nationally and internationally significant archives.
Open to everyone, The Hold, offers not only archives-specific services in the search room, library, and education room but also state-of-the-art public facilities (including Changing Places) and teaching spaces for staff and students from the University of Suffolk. An exhibition gallery, café, gift shop and garden complete the visitor experience.
