Visit The Hold car-free

Visit by bus for just £3 each way. Most buses in England are offering £3 single fares until March 2027. Our journey planner will show you if your route is included, or you can find a full list of participating operators and routes here.

It’s quite easy to visit The Hold car-free.

The train station is an about 20-minute walk along the river.

Trains run to Ipswich from: London Liverpool Street (80 mins), Stratford International (75 mins), Shenfield (80 mins), Colchester (20 mins), Bury St Edmunds (30 mins), Norwich (40 mins) and other nearby towns.

Buses run to Ipswich from: Needham Market (30 mins), Stowmarket (45 mins), Felixstowe (45 mins) and other local towns, plus coaches from London.

About The Hold

Located in Ipswich's Waterfront, The Hold is a fully accessible building that houses the majority of Suffolk's nationally and internationally significant archives.

Open to everyone, The Hold, offers not only archives-specific services in the search room, library, and education room but also state-of-the-art public facilities (including Changing Places) and teaching spaces for staff and students from the University of Suffolk. An exhibition gallery, café, gift shop and garden complete the visitor experience.
