Visit The Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre car-free

Travel a greener way and then relax with a nice cup of tea.

It’s easy as buses X45 and 47 stop almost outside.

Buses run from: Metrocentre (10 mins), Eldon Square (25 mins) and Consett (40 mins).

Trains run to Metrocentre from: Sunderland (30 mins), Hartlepool (60 mins) and Carlisle (70 mins).

Discount: Buy one get free on hot drinks; or 50% off tea/coffee if you come on your own. Show a valid train ticket, bus ticket or bike helmet. The venue is free entry.

Within the North East Combined Authority area, visit by bus for a maximum of £2.50 single or get a day’s unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel from anywhere within the North East Combined Authority area for £7.50 by buying a TNE Day Saver.

For journeys wholly within Tyne and Wear (including Metro and Shields Ferry and Sunderland to Blaydon rail) you can buy a Tyne and Wear Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.80.

Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). This offer applies within the North East Combined Authority – County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.

All other bus tickets and passes are also valid for the discount offer.

When you travel by train, a Newcastle and Gateshead PlusBus ticket offers unlimited travel around the area.

View a remote landscape, river and Hadrian’s Wall from the Tyne Valley Line which runs from Carlisle to Blaydon, MetroCentre and Newcastle. The East Coast Mainline runs from Edinburgh and York to Newcastle through the Northumberland Coast National Landscape. Or, if you travel from the South there’s a great view of the Tyne river bridges.

Kids’ activities for your journey can be found at Go North EastNorthern or LNER, including a special children’s version of the Window Seater app. Look out for family events at the heritage centre too.

Cycle path National Route 14, the C2C (Coast to Coast) runs past the heritage centre. Cycle from Metrocentre station off-road and beside the river on the Derwent Walk Railway Path.

Plan your cycle route here – the 14 bike racks are marked in blue. They are just outside the café and visible from inside. You can borrow spare parts and a puncture repair kit.
