Visit Great North Museum: Hancock car-free

It’s very easy to visit the Great North Museum: Hancock car-free. It’s located in Newcastle University campus in the north of Newcastle city centre, and is well signposted.
Haymarket Metro station and bus interchange are a 5-minute walk away.
Buses from across the Newcastle area stop close by, plus from: Consette (55 mins), Hexham (60 mins) and Alnwick (90 mins).
Trains run from: Sunderland (20 mins), Darlington (35 mins), York (55 mins), Middlesbrough (65 mins) and Carlisle (80 mins). It’s then a 15-minute walk, or 2 minutes on the Metro.

Within the North East Combined Authority area, visit by bus for a maximum of £2.50 single or get a day’s unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel from anywhere within the North East Combined Authority area for £7.50 by buying a TNE Day Saver.
For journeys wholly within Tyne and Wear (including Metro and Shields Ferry and Sunderland to Blaydon rail) you can buy a Tyne and Wear Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.80.
Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). When you travel by train, a Newcastle and Gateshead PlusBus ticket offers unlimited travel around the city by bus. If you are already in the area, a Network One or Nexus ticket offers travel on various forms of transport. Great North Museum: Hancock is in zone A.

Admire the Northumberland Coast National Landscape from trains on the East Coast Mainline from Edinburgh and York. Travel from the South for a great view of the Tyne river bridges. Hancock has the Mouse House for under 5s and family events during school holidays
Off-road cycle path National Route 72 runs along the river and joins National Route 725, a mix of on and off-road. Plan your cycle route here. There is rack space for at least 10 bicycles outside the main entrance to the museum. You’ll find a useful guide and links to hiring a bicycle or e-bike in Newcastle on the You Well website.
National Trail Hadrian’s Wall Path follows the river through the middle of Newcastle, as does the Tyne path.
Great North Museum: Hancock is a 20-minute walk from the Tyne Bridge.
The Angel’s Way also cuts through the centre of Newcastle.

Plenty of local bus services bring you to Newcastle City Centre, plus:
Bus X15 runs from Berwick-upon-Tweed (2.5 hrs) and Alnwick (90 mins) to Haymarket bus station. It’s then a 5-minute walk up Barras Bridge road.
Bus 685 runs from Carlisle (2.5 hrs) and Hexham (60 mins) to Eldon Square bus station. It’s then a 5-10 minute walk up Barras Bridge road.
Bus X45 and bus X75 run from Consett (55 mins) to Eldon Square bus station. It’s then a 5-10 minute walk up Barras Bridge road.
There are coaches to Newcastle from across the UK operated by National Express or FlixBus.
By train
There are direct trains to Newcastle from:
- Gateshead (5 mins), Hartlepool (55 mins), Middlesbrough (65 mins), Sunderland (20 mins).
- Northumberland Line: Ashington (35 mins) via Blyth.
- Tyne Valley Line: Carlisle (80 mins), Haltwhistle (55 mins), Hexham (35 mins).
- Northern East Coast Mainline: Alnmouth (25 mins), Berwick-upon-Tweed (45 mins), Chathill (60 mins), Morpeth (15 mins) and Edinburgh (85 mins)
- Southern East Coast Mainline: Darlington (35 mins), Durham (10 mins), Northallerton (45 mins), York (55 mins).
- Further south: Doncaster (90 mins), London (3 hrs), Peterborough (2 hrs).

It’s then about a 20-minute walk to Great North Museum: Hancock. Walk along Grainger Street all the way until you pass the Monument. Turn Right onto Brunswick Place, and Left onto Northumberland Street. Keep going past the church, and then cross Barras Bridge road.
Otherwise, Haymarket is under 5 minutes North by Metro.

By Metro
There are direct services to Haymarket Metro (zone A) station on the Green or Yellow lines from:
Airport (20 mins), Four Lane Ends (10 mins), Heworth (10 mins), North Shields (20 mins), Northumberland Park (20 mins), Regent Centre (10 mins), South Shields (30 mins) and Sunderland (35 mins).
It’s then about a 5-minute walk along the churchyard and across Barras Bridge road.
