Visit Tynemouth Aquarium car-free

Visit by bus for just £3 each way. Most buses in England are offering £3 single fares until March 2027. Our journey planner will show you if your route is included, or you can find a full list of participating operators and routes here.

You can get to Tynemouth Aquarium on bus 306 from Gateshead, Central Newcastle and North Shields. Buses run frequently, and the journey from Central Newcastle is about 1 hour. Hop off at Tynemouth Beach Road / Grand Parade for a short walk to the Aquarium.

The nearest Tyne and Wear Metro Station is Cullercoats, which is a 15-minute walk along the sea front to the Aquarium.

If you travel on the Shields Ferry, bus 19 connects with the ferry at North Shields Ferry Terminal for the 9-minute journey to North Shields Metro Station (ferry tickets valid on the bus). Change there to the Tyne and Wear Metro for Cullercoats.

If you are coming from further afield, the nearest station is Newcastle, which is served by regular East Coast Mainline services from London, York and Darlington, also from Edinburgh and Berwick. Transpennine services run from Manchester and Leeds, and local services run from Carlisle and Hexham, Morpeth, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Sunderland. Then hop on the Metro (Yellow Line) to Cullercoats, which takes 30 minutes. From there it is a 15-minute walk along the seafront to the Aquarium.

Get a £2 discount when you travel to the Aquarium by bus.

Bus fares: Within the North East Combined Authority area, visit by bus for a maximum of £2.50 single or get a day’s unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel from anywhere within the North East Combined Authority area for £7.50 by buying a TNE Day Saver.

For journeys wholly within Tyne and Wear (including Metro and Shields Ferry and Sunderland to Blaydon rail) you can buy a Tyne and Wear Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.80.

Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). This offer applies within the North East Combined Authority – County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.

All other bus tickets and passes are also valid for the discount offer.
