From Inverness station, a few trains a day run along the scenic Far North Lines to Helmsdale station (one train on Sundays). The journey takes a good 2½ hours, but the coastal views are so wild and remote that the journey is a spectacular tourist activity in its own right.
There are regular direct trains to Inverness from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
You can also catch bus X99 from Inverness to Helmsdale. It stops across the river in the village, a short walk from the station. Bus 906 runs from Lairg.
