Travel a greener way and enjoy 25% off Day Rover Tickets. It’s easy.

Buses take half-an-hour from Newcastle or Gateshead city centre. View the railway’s own map or an OpenStreetMap.

Trains run to Newcastle from: Sunderland (20 mins), Darlington (35 mins), York (55 mins), Middlesbrough (65 mins) and Carlisle (80 mins). From the station it’s a short walk to Neville Street (Stop E) for buses X30 and X31 to the Tanfield Railway.

Discount: Enjoy a 25% discount on standard Day Rover steam-train tickets with a valid normal-train ticket or with a valid bus ticket dated for the day of your visit.

Within the North East Combined Authority area, visit by bus for a maximum of £2.50 single or get a day’s unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel from anywhere within the North East Combined Authority area for £7.50 by buying a TNE Day Saver.

For journeys wholly within Tyne and Wear (including Metro and Shields Ferry and Sunderland to Blaydon rail) you can buy a Tyne and Wear Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.80.

Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). This offer applies within the North East Combined Authority – County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.

All other bus tickets and passes are also valid for the discount offer.

When you travel by train, a Newcastle and Gateshead PlusBus ticket offers unlimited travel around the city by bus as far as Sunniside station on the Tanfield Railway.

View the Northumberland Coast National Landscape from trains on the East Coast Mainline from Edinburgh and York to Newcastle. Travel from the South for a great view of the Tyne river bridges. If you travel through the remote landscapes from Carlise, then look out for Hadrian’s Wall on the river Tyne Valley Line to Newcastle.

Cycle off-road from Washington. Cyclists and walkers can reach the Marley Hill shed site via the Tanfield Railway Path from Gateshead or the Bowes Railway Path from Jarrow. There are ascents/descents where the railways were rope hauled. These routes can be used together as a circuit from anywhere on Tyneside. The distances to Andrews House are: Sunniside (1 mile), Lobley Hill (4 miles), Kibblesworth (2 miles) or Bowes Railway (6 miles). Plan your cycle route here to the bike rack at Marley Hill car park.

A trail runs beside most of the railway. Visit Causey Arch on the Tyne and Wear Heritage Way, it’s a short walk from the station with the same name. Maps of Gateshead are available from tourist information services. The railway is also on the Great North Forest Heritage Trail.

Taxis need to be booked ahead at MetroCentre (15 mins), for example with Gateshead based Dean Taxis: 0191 444 4444. Newcastle (15 mins), Chester-le-Street (15 mins) and Durham (25 mins) have taxi ranks.
