Getting to Talyllyn Railway car-free
Here's our recommended route to Talyllyn Railway. To get bus and train times and walking routes use our journey planner.
By train
Transport for Wales trains run to Tywyn from Birmingham via Wolverhampton, Telford, Shrewsbury, Welshpool, Newtown, Caersws, Machynlleth and Aberdyfi. Trains run about every 2 hours. The journey from Birmingham takes just over 3 hours, from Shrewsbury 2 hours.
Connections are available at Birmingham from London and The Midlands, and at Shrewsbury from Manchester, Chester, Cardiff and Welsh Border stations.
You can also travel on the Cambrian Line to Tywyn from Pwllheli via Porthmadog, Harlech and Barmouth. Trains run about every 2 hours. The journey from Pwllheli takes 2 hours, from Barmouth 30 minutes.
From Tywyn station it’s about a 5-minute walk to the Talyllyn Railway’s station at Tywyn Wharf.

By bus
From Dolgellau hop on bus 28 from Eldon Square. Buses run a few times a day (lesson Sundays), and take about 55 minutes. Get off at Tywyn station, which is just about a 5-minute walk from the Talyllyn Railway.
If you are travelling from North Wales, bus T2 from Bangor to Aberystwyth, and bus T3 from Wrexham to Barmouth both call at Dolgellau, where you can change to bus 28.
From Machynlleth or Aberdyfi catch bus X29, which runs a few times a day (less on Sundays). The journey from Machynlleth takes about 35 minutes. Hop off at Tywyn High Street, which is less than 10 minutes walk from the Talyllyn Railway.
