Visit Martin Mere Wetland Centre car-free
It takes a little planning to visit Martin Mere Wetland Centre car-free. There are off-road walks from local train stations along footpaths. Follow the instructions or map.
There are direct trains to Burscough Bridge from: New Lane (a couple of minutes), Southport (15 mins), Wigan (25 mins), Bolton (15 mins), Manchester Victoria (45 mins) and Stalybridge (55 mins). There is a signposted footpath from the train station to Martin Mere. The walk to the visitor centre takes about 40 minutes.
There are direct trains to Burscough Junction from: Ormskirk (5 mins) and Preston (25 mins). Walk 10 minutes to Burscough Bridge and follow the footpath from there.
New Lane is another station on the Burscough Bridge line and there is an on-road cycle route to Martin Mere.
Bus 337 runs a few times per day (not on Sundays) from Ormskirk (about 10 mins) and Chorley (65 mins). Hop off at Higgins Lane (industrial estate). It’s then a 40-minute walk. There are also local taxis.

At WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) Martin Mere you can take a canoe safari or guided boat tour, wild walk, go pond dipping, or visit the adventure playground and craft room. The park is home to otters, flamingos, ducks, geese and swans. Check the website for current events.
