Visit Leighton Hall car-free

It’s easy to visit Leighton Hall near Lancaster car-free.

From Carnforth, you can make the 20 minute bus or 5 minute train journey through glorious Arnside and Silverdale AONB part of your visit.

Trains run to Silverdale (40-minute walk) and Carnforth (70-minute walk) from: Barrow-in-Furness (45 mins), Lancaster (15 mins), Preston (35 mins), and stations in Manchester (85 mins). Trains also run to Carnforth from Leeds (100 mins).

Buses from Carnforth stop 10-20 minutes away.

Buses also run to Carnforth from: Kendal (35 mins), Lancaster (20 mins), Morecambe (25 mins) and Windermere (55 mins).

Scenic Furness train Line runs through Silverdale and Carnforth. Check out the window gazing guide and local animal colouring sheets and other children’s activities.

The Betham train Line also runs to Carnforth. It has an activity pack and i-spy game and a story. Find more activities at National Rail.

You can also get to Carnforth on the Lakes Connection bus from Lancaster.

Cycle routes National Routes 6, 90 & 700 all pass close by the Reserve. Just three miles from Carnforth, explore the Bay Cycle Way/ Route 700– part of an 81-mile cycle trek along one of Britain’s newest, and most beautiful routes.

Glorying in quiet roads, National cycle trails and peaceful footpaths, the surrounding Arnside and Silverdale AONB is the perfect scenic landscape to enjoy walking or cycling to Leighton Hall. Plan your cycle route here.

Walking from Carnforth (miles) takes about 70 minutes. It includes stretches along the Lancashire Lakeland Link as far as Warton Crag, and joining the Woodland Sea & Wildlife path at Peter Lane. This path goes through Leighton Hall estate, on a loop to Arnside.

Furness Line walk 8 goes from Silverdale to Leighton Hall. The Bentham Line has walks and trails too.

Dogs are allowed in the parkland away from the house, but it becomes complicated and dogs cannot possibly be near when the birds are out! So for the open season it is easier to say no dogs allowed.

Taxis need to be booked ahead. ‘Jock’s Taxis’ offer a prebooked service for visitors to the Hall. Book on 01524 727777 and travel from Carnforth train station.

Enjoy an afternoon of history and nostalgia at Leighton Hall, the lived-in home of the Gillow furniture making family. There are no roped of areas and tours are entertaining and informal. Leighton is child friendly with space to play and let off steam. All visits include a guided house tour, a birds of prey flying display (weather permitting) and access to the gardens, grounds, tree face trail and woodland walk. There’s also time for refreshments in the charming tearooms.
