Tips for providing car-free travel information

5 simple tips to provide useful, inspiring car-free travel information online

Follow this checklist of steps to increase the number of car-free visitors to your site – and make the most of your Good Journey membership.

1. Add your Good Journey page LINK to your ‘Getting here / Find us’ page

  • Link with our standard text on your directions page:

‘We hold the Good Journey Mark for welcoming car-free visitors. Travel a greener way and enjoy [insert your appealing car-free incentive]. Plan your journey by train, bus, bike or foot at Good Journey [link to your Good Journey page].’

2. Make the link PROMINENT and eye-catching

  • Position the text at the top of the directions page.

Make it the first thing people see on the page. Putting Good Journey information before car directions makes it stand out. Similarly, people are more likely to select sustainable items from a menu when they are ‘nudged’ at the top. Not everyone reads the whole page, so they need to see the information quickly. Not everyone knows it is possible to travel car-free, so they may be pleased to find out.

These attraction websites draw attention to their car-free travel offer with text boxes and fonts: Blenheim Palace, Marina Theatre, Colchester Castle.

These attraction websites use photos to make green transport and cycling attractive: e-Bike Holiday, Richardsons, Castle Drogo.

  1. 3. Add our LOGO to your website

Members can use this across your website and communications. The logo is for members only.

4. Highlight green travel across your website

Add green travel messaging across your website, in case people don’t look at your directions page:

Dispersing the information inspires more people to consider green travel options and shows your commitment to sustainability.

5. Shout about green travel on your communication channels

Feature green travel wherever you can, such as:

  • in your email signature
  • in your social media bio links or ‘About’ section
  • in social media posts, tagging @GoodJourneyUK
  • in other listings and press
  • Don’t forget to look for opportunities to do this offline around your site and in print publications (leaflets and posters) too!

6 Use POSITIVE wording
