Visit Wentworth Castle Gardens car-free
It’s easy to get to Wentworth Castle Gardens car-free. It’s about a 10-minute bus ride from Barnsley train station.
There direct trains to Barnsley from: Sheffield (about 20 mins), Leeds (30 mins), Huddersfield (45 mins) and Nottingham (80 mins).
By bus, Barnsley is about 60 minutes from: Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and Wakefield. Direct buses also run to the gardens from Stocksbridge (15 mins) and Penistone (30 mins).

National Route 62, the Trans-Pennine Trail passes 1/4 mile from the Stainborough gateway, between Silkstone and Worsborough. Plan your cycle route here.
The Wild Yorkshire Way and Trans Pennine Trail pass nearby. There are also walks around the parkland.

Getting to Wentworth Castle Gardens car-free
Here's our recommended route to Wentworth Castle Gardens. To get bus and train times and walking routes use our journey planner.
By bus from Barnsley
Buses Bus 24, Little Don 34 and bus 24a (24a runs on Sundays) from Barnsley stop close to Wentworth Castle Gardens. Buses leave from Barnsley Interchange, stop A4 every couple of hours. The journey takes about 10 minutes.
Get off the bus at Stainborough, adjacent to Gilroyd Lane/Lowe Lane (ask the driver to let you know where to get off, or keep track on google maps). It’s then about a 5-minute stroll to the Park Drive entrance – shown as parkland to the bottom right of this PDF map.
Please note: there’s no access to the site from the Lowe Lane/Stainborough Lane (Northern College) bus stop.
By train via Barnsley
There are direct trains to Barnsley from:
- Sheffield (20 mins, blue and purple tram lines), Meadowhall (20 mins, yellow tram line), Chapeltown (15 mins),
- Chesterfield (45 mins), Huddersfield (45 mins), Leeds (30 mins), Lincoln (115 mins), Wakefield Kirkgate (15 mins), Worksop (60 mins), Nottingham (80 mins) and many other Northern towns.
Change for connecting trains at Meadowhall or Sheffield from:
- Rotherham (5 mins), Doncaster (15 mins) or Manchester (50-60 mins).

By train via Dodworth
There are direct trains to Dodworth from: Sheffield (35 mins), Meadowhall (30 mins) and Huddersfield (40 mins). Search for train times and cheaper tickets with Good Journey.

By bus via Barnsley
There are buses to Barnsley Interchange from: Denby Dale (bus 94 and bus 99), Doncaster (bus X19 and bus X20), Matlock (bus X17 gold), Rotherham (bus 7 and bus 22X), Sheffield (bus X17 gold and bus 2), Wakefield (buses 96a, 96b and 96c) and Wombwell (bus 226 and bus 67).
Local buses from around Barnsley also run to the Interchange.

By bus via Penistone or Stocksbridge
Buses also run direct to Wentworth Castle Gardens from Penistone (bus 24 and bus 24a, 30 mins) and Stocksbridge (Little Don 34, 15 mins) – see above.
You can change at at Stocksbridge from Sheffield (bus 57 or 57a).

About Wentworth Castle Gardens
Despite a turbulent past, this breath-taking Grade 1 Registered Park and Gardens has plenty to explore in its 600 acre landscape. From Gothic Castle Folly, to Victorian Conservatory, from avenues with surprises at the top to rolling designed Parkland there is something for everyone. Take in a stroll through the Deer Park along the banks of the Serpentine Lakes and spot our two resident herds of deer or Head further into the Ancient Woodlands, carpeted in bluebells in May.
Further up the estate discover wilderness gardens, the National Collections of Rhododendron, Azalea and Magnolia ablaze in colour in May and June. Through the summer months, explore the winding paths, find the Fernery and picnic beneath the medieval style turrets of the Castle Folly.
