There are frequent buses to Bowness from Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere. There are also direct buses from Penrith, Barrow and Ulverston and connections from Lancaster, Kendal and Keswick. There’s also a good train service from Manchester, Preston, Lancaster and Oxenholme to Windermere – for connecting buses to Bowness.
Cyclists are welcome and bike racks available. National Route 6 passes through Bowness. Plan your cycle route here.

The lovely scenery on route to the Museum is best enjoyed by bus or train, including the Lakes Line from Oxenholme to Windermere.
If travelling by train, you can buy a Windermere PlusBus ticket with your train ticket – valid all day on buses to Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere, including the open-top bus 599.
Stagecoach offer a range of special tickets for bus travel throughout The Lake District, for just one day or up to a week.

By bus direct to the Museum
In the summer season bus 508 from Penrith, Patterdale and Windermere stops right outside the museum.
By bus direct to Bowness
Bus 599 (open-top in season) provides a frequent daily service from Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere to Bowness. Other buses to Bowness are bus 6 from Barrow and Ulverston, and bus 755 from Heysham, Morecambe, Carnforth and Kendal.

By bus via to Windermere
By train
The nearest station is Windermere, with regular trains from Manchester, Preston, Lancaster and Oxenholme. There are connections from London, Glasgow, Carlisle and all cities in the North of England.
From Windermere, jump on bus 599 from outside the station for the short ride to Bowness.

By boat
You can also reach the museum by boat from Ambleside and Brockhole with Windermere Lake Cruises, or on your own boat!
