View cliffs, piers and lighthouses on bus E1 scenic route from South Shields. Bus 20, the ‘Prince Bishop’ from Durham alternates between Wearside country and heritage. There are more pictureque bus rides in the North East too.
Cycle path National Route 1 runs mostly off-road from over the River Wear (as the Two Rivers Cycleway) and across Sunderland. The C2C route runs along the North of the River Wear.
Plan your cycle route here. There are bike racks opposite Nandos on the High Street, and also along Lambton Street pedestrian area.
You can take your bike on some Metro train services (and on all new trains from 2024).
Footpath the Weardale Way also crosses Wearmouth Bridge into Sunderland, then follows the river in-land. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the bridge to Sunderland Bowl.

By bus
There are direct buses to Sunderland from:
- Durham (bus X20 or Prince Bishops 20, 45-55 mins)
- Chester-le-Street (bus 78 or Country Ranger 8, 45-55 mins)
- Houghton-le-Spring (Prince Bishops 20 or bus X20)
- Newcastle (bus X24, 40 mins or 56 Cityrider, 75 mins)
- Peterlee (Peterlee Purple X6, 35 mins)
- Seaham (Peterlee Purple X6, 15 mins)
- South Shields (buses 24, 30 mins E1, E2 or E6, 45 mins)
- Washington (bus 2 or bus 8, 30-40 mins)
- There are also buses from: Consett, Hebburn and Stanley.
Buses arrive at Sunderland Interchange.
It’s then about a 10-minute walk. Head into town toward the train station. From Holmside, turn Left onto Waterloo Place. Continue along Market Place and Union Street. Turn Right onto High Street West.
By Metro
Sunderland Metro station (inside Sunderland train station) is on the Green line from:
Central Station (30 mins), Gateshead (25 mins), Haymarket (35 mins), Heworth (20 mins), Monument (30 mins), Park Lane (2 mins) and Regent Centre (45 mins).
You can walk to Sunderland Bowl in 5 minutes. Use the main station exit on Market Place. Turn Right onto Union Street, passing Greggs; and then Right again onto High Street West, passing Pound Land.
By train
There are direct trains to Sunderland from:
