It’s easy to visit Segedunum car-free. It’s located in North Tyneside, a 5-minute walk from Wallsend Metro station and bus stops.
Buses from Newcastle city centre take about 30 minutes.
Metro station Wallsend is 10 minutes from Monument.

Within the North East Combined Authority area, visit by bus for a maximum of £2.50 single or get a day’s unlimited bus, Metro and Shields Ferry travel from anywhere within the North East Combined Authority area for £7.50 by buying a TNE Day Saver.
For journeys wholly within Tyne and Wear (including Metro and Shields Ferry and Sunderland to Blaydon rail) you can buy a Tyne and Wear Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.80.
Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). This offer applies within the North East Combined Authority – County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.

Buses run to Wallsend (toward Whitley Bay) from:
- Gateshead Interchange (Coaster bus 301, 35 mins)
- Metrocentre Interchange (Coaster bus 301, 85 mins)
- Newcastle Central Station (Coaster bus 301 or bus 22, 30 mins)
- Newcastle Monument (bus 22 or bus 40, 25 mins).
Jump off bus 301 or bus 22 at the High Street. It’s then a 5-10 minute walk. Walk backwards along the High Street, then turn Right onto Station Road.
Jump off bus 40 at the Metro station. It’s then a 5-minute walk away from the railway line.
By Metro
There are direct services to Wallsend (zone B) station on the Yellow line from:
Byker (5 mins), Four Lane Ends (35 mins), North Shields (10 mins), Monument (10 mins), Northumberland Park (15 mins).
Change at Monument or walk from: Central Station or Haymarket.
Change at Monument from: Airport, Gateshead, Regent Centre, Sunderland.
Change at Monument or take a longer direct route from. Chichester, Heworth, Jarrow, South Gosforth, South Shields.
Jump off bus 40 at the Metro station. It’s then a 5-minute walk away from the railway line.
By train
There are direct trains to Newcastle from:
- Gateshead (5 mins), Hartlepool (55 mins), Middlesbrough (65 mins), Sunderland (20 mins).
- Northumberland Line: Ashington (35 mins) via Blyth.
- Tyne Valley Line: Carlisle (80 mins), Haltwhistle (55 mins), Hexham (35 mins).
- Northern East Coast Mainline: Alnmouth (25 mins), Berwick-upon-Tweed (45 mins), Chathill (60 mins), Morpeth (15 mins) and Edinburgh (85 mins)
- Southern East Coast Mainline: Darlington (35 mins), Durham (10 mins), Northallerton (45 mins), York (55 mins).
- Further south: Doncaster (90 mins), London (3 hrs), Peterborough (2 hrs).

From Central Station, you can catch a Metro (2 mins) to Monument or walk (10 mins on Grainger Street). Next, change for the Metro to Wallsend, which takes about 10 minutes on the Yellow Line.
Alternatively, Coaster bus 301 or bus 22 take about 30 minutes from Central Station.
About Segedunum Roman Fort
Segedunum is part of the World Heritage Site of the Hadrian’s Wall Frontier and marks the beginning and the end of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.
100 feet viewing tower gives unique perspective of the excavated fort as well as spectacular views of the surrounding area.
Hadrian’s Wall: closer than you think. The site features remains of Hadrian’s Wall alongside a reconstructed section of Wall, to show how it could have looked 1,800 years ago.
On the site of the former Swan Hunter shipyard.
