About Kilmartin Museum

Home to 12,000 years of history!

Our museum sits within an amazing landscape of archaeological wonders and nationally important wildlife and habitats. Since opening in 1997, Kilmartin Museum’s aim has been to interpret, explain and conserve the archaeology and natural heritage of Kilmartin Glen, whilst also caring for ancient artefacts from across Argyll.

The new museum exhibits are really special, showcasing aspects of prehistoric ritual, rock art, symbols of power of the warrior kings of Dunadd and intricately sculpted medieval crosses. We have hands on activities that bring the day to day lives of our ancestors to life and we integrate information on natural history throughout, recognising our nationally important local wildlife and habitats. Visitor comments are overwhelmingly positive and we inspire learners of all ages with our interactive displays and information.

The Museum staff and volunteers are on hand to answer questions and make your visit special and we run activities and workshops throughout the year, so there’s always something to look out for.

The Museum shop is packed full of locally sourced quirky and ethical products and we offer everything from pocket money toys to unique pieces of art and a fantastic selection of books.

Our onsite café the Glen Bisto is independently run and serves light lunches, home baking and coffees.

From April to September every year, we host family friendly guided walks around Kilmartin Glen. On these volunteer-led walks you will visit many of the amazing ancient sites in Kilmartin Glen, including the Linear Cairn Cemetery, Nether Largie South Chambered Cairn, and Temple Wood Stone Circle. They are a fun and friendly way to discover what makes this landscape so special!
