It’s easy to visit Hole in Wand car-free as buses run direct. It’s located on the Dalton Park retail park, underneath Cineworld and opposite McDonalds (near the playground). Here’s the outlet map.
Buses run from: Seaham & Peterlee (10 mins), Sunderland (30 mins), Durham, Gateshead & Newcastle (40 mins), Middlesbrough & Stockton (60 mins).

For journeys wholly within County Durham you can buy a Durham Day Rover and travel all day for just £6.
Passengers aged 5-21 can get £1 single or £3 regionwide day tickets. However, kids aged 5-11 travel free on the bus with an adult during school holidays (up to three children aged 11 and under). This offer applies within the North East Combined Authority – County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.
All other bus tickets and passes are also valid for the discount offer.

By bus from Sunderland
Buses X6, the Peterlee Purples and bus 22 stop nearby. Buses leave from Sunderland interchange (A or B) frequently, Monday to Saturday. Bus 22 only runs on Sunday. The journey takes about 25 minutes. Hop off at the shopping centre bus shelter, between two grass verges. It’s then about a 5-minute walk forward.
Bus 61, the East Durham Explorers stop outside and goes via Ryhope and on to South Hetton. Buses leave from Sunderland interchange (C) frequently (regularly on Sundays). The journey takes about 35 minutes. Shortly before arriving you will spot white the white buildings, which look a bit like containers with tent roofs. Hop off at the crossing bus stop (not sheltered) and carefully go over the road into an out-of-town shopping centre. It’s a couple of minutes’ walk.
Bus 22 also runs to Dalton Park, but is slower. It goes via Ryhope.
By bus from Seaham
Buses X6, the Peterlee Purples stop nearby. Buses leave from Seaham interchange (B) frequently, Monday to Saturday. The journey takes about 10 minutes. Hop off at the shopping centre bus shelter, between two grass verges. It’s then about a 5-minute walk forward.
Buses 65, the Prince Bishops stop newby. Buses leave from: Seaham interchange (C) The journey takes about 15 minutes. Hop off at the crossing bus stop (not sheltered) and carefully go over the road into an out-of-town shopping centre. It’s a couple of minutes’ walk.
By bus from Durham
Buses 65, the Prince Bishops stop newby. Buses leave from: Durham bus station (E) The journey takes about 40 minutes. Hop off at the crossing bus shelter and carefully go over the road into an out-of-town shopping centre. It’s about a 5-minute walk.
Bus 22 also runs to Dalton Park, but is slower. It goes via Easington, Sherborn and Shotton.
By bus from Peterlee
Bus X10 of the X Lines and bus X6 of the Peterlee Purples stop nearby. Buses leave from Peterlee bus station (A or D). The journey takes about 10 minutes. Hop off at the shopping centre bus shelter, between two grass verges. It’s then about a 5-minute walk Left.
The X10 goes all the way to Middlesborough (65 mins) and Stockton (54 mins).
By bus from Middelsborough and Stockton on Tees or Newcastle and Gateshead
