It’s easy to visit car-free, as buses from Forfar (20 mins) stop inside the grounds, Monday to Saturday.
Buses from Dundee (40 mins) stop nearby on weekdays. At weekends, take the bus to Forfar (30 mins) then change.
Trains run to Dundee from: Perth (20 mins), Aberdeen (65 mins) and Stirling (65 mins).

Dundee train station is in zone 5 if you use One Ticket. To explore within the city limits, add a PlusBus train ticket or ABC bus ticket.
View fields and heaths from the Dundee to Glamis bus ride; or the Tay salmon river if you arrive in the city by train. Occasional luxury trains can be booked on the route too.

Getting to Glamis Castle car-free
Here's our recommended route to Glamis Castle. To get bus and train times and walking routes use our journey planner.
By bus on Saturday from Forfar
On Saturdays, bus 125 leaves from Forfar Tesco, stopping at St John’s Church and the council offices on the High Street. You could wait under the bus shelter or in a nearby cafe. The journey takes about 20 minutes.
Catch the bus at 10.40. These buses run direct to Glamis Castle carpark, stopping in the corner nearest to the entrance, cafe and toilets.
Return buses leave at 16.39 back to Forfar.
By bus on weekdays from Forfar
On weekdays, bus 125 leaves from St John’s Church and the council offices on Forfar High Street. You could wait under the bus shelter or in a nearby cafe. The journey takes about 20 minutes.
The direct bus departs at 12.57. This bus stops right inside Glamis Castle carpark, at the corner nearest to the entrance, cafe and toilets. Return buses leave at 16.51 back to Forfar.
Other buses bring you to Glamis Primary School. This is a 20-minute walk through parkland, or 30 minutes beside a stream.
By bus on Weekdays from Dundee
Bus 22 runs a few times per day from Seagate bus station and Commercial Street. The journey takes about 40 minutes. Leave at 08.45. Buses home depart at 16.56.
Jump off at Bridgend cottages. It’s then about a 15-minute walk along a river-side footpath through the castle grounds.
By bus via Forfar
There are regular buses to Forfar from:
These buses go to the High Street, from where you can also catch the next bus.
E1 electric bus can be pre-booked to stop at Forfar from:
- Aberdeen (75 mins, Union Street)
- Dundee (25 mins, train station)
- Edinburgh (2.5 hrs, Haymarket)
- and request stops in-between.
It will be about a 10-minute walk along Castle Street to the connecting bus stops.

By train via Dundee
There are direct trains to Dundee from:

- Stirling (65 mins), Dunblane (60 mins)
- Edinburgh (90 mins), Glasgow (85 mins), Newcastle (3 hrs), Inverness (3.5 hrs), London (6 hrs).
