Travel a greener way with a combined bus and boat ticket.
It’s easy to visit car-free.
Buses from Windermere (50 mins), Ambleside stop (35 mins) and Hawkshead (15 mins) and Ulverston (40 mins) stop a short walk-away from the main cruise start-point. Buses also stop near other jetties – see map.
Trains run to Windermere from: Oxenholme (20 mins), Preston (55 mins) and Manchester (110 mins).

PlusBus train tickets offer unlimited travel within a defined area. While not valid for the boat trips, they do work for other day-trips. Windermere PlusBus tickets are valid across Windermere and Gasmere. Kendal/Oxenholme, Whitehaven and Barrow PlusBus tickets are valid within the towns.
View Lakeland-postcard scenes all the way on bus The Lakes 505 from Ambleside. Look out for bracken, drystone walls, woodland, Hawkhead village and finally the shores of Coniston itself.
Cycle paths take you some of the way to Coniston Launch or Keswick Launch.
National Route 6 passes nearby. Plan your cycle route here. Wray has bike racks and a fitted bike pump and bikes are allowed on the Bowness ferry.
Walking routes are suggested on the pages for individual jetties. The Coniston Water Circuit and Cumbria Way paths follow the lake.

Getting to Coniston Launch car-free
Here's our recommended route to Coniston Launch. To get bus and train times and walking routes use our journey planner.
By bus
Bus 505 runs a few times per day from:
- Windermere train station (about 50 mins),
- Brockhole (35 mins),
- Ambleside (35 mins),
- Hawkshead (15 mins).
Hop off at the Coniston Inn bus stop. It’s then about a 3-minute walk to Coniston Launch. Head to the pub car-park and follow it round until you find the lake footpath.
By bus from Ulverston
By train via Windermere
There are direct trains to Windermere from:
- Cumbria & Lake District: Burneside (10 mins), Kendal (15 mins), Oxenholme (20 mins), Staveley (5 mins),
- Greater Manchester: Bolton (105 mins), Manchester (110 mins),
- Lancheshire: Chorley (90 mins), Lancaster (35 mins) and Preston (55 mins).
There are connections from London, Glasgow, Carlisle and all cities in the North of England.
