Trains from London Kings Cross or St Pancras International take 20 minutes to reach Stevenage or Baldock.
There are also train services from: Peterborough (25 mins), Cambridge (35 mins), London Bridge (45 mins) and other London stations.
You can take a direct bus to Cottered village near Buntingford from either Baldock train station (10 mins) or Stevenage train station (55 mins).
Alternatively, if you fancy stretching your legs and exploring the area, take the bus to the edge of Stevenage and then walk from Great Ashby (90 mins) or Walkern (75 mins). Check out Cromer Windmill on the way.

When you take the train to Stevenage, a Stevenage PlusBus ticket gives you unlimited bus travel as far as Walkern or Great Ashby on the edge of Stevenage. However, please note that these tickets are not valid for Cottered or Buntingford.

By direct bus to Cottered (Stevenage PlusBus tickets NOT valid)
Bus 37 runs a few times per day (none on Sundays) to Cottered village. Buses leave from: Stevenage bus & train stations (55 mins), Hitchin station (30 mins), Letchworth station (20 mins), Baldock market place (10 mins) and Buntingford (5 mins). Request to jump off at Stocking Hill in Cottered. It’s then a couple of minutes’ walk.
Alternatively, HertsLynx is Hertfordshire County Council’s Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) service, offering a flexible way to travel by bus. Unlike traditional bus services, the service doesn’t follow a timetable or have any set routes. Instead, you can choose from a wide variety of pick up and drop off locations within designated operating zones across Hertfordshire.
Passengers select where and when they would like to travel by using the HertsLynx app, the booking website or by phone on 01992 555513. The service operates daily with some evening services on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the operating hours.

By bus and foot via Walkern (Stevenage PlusBus tickets VALID)
Bus 38 runs a few times per day (none on Sundays) to Walkern village. Buses leave from: Stevenage bus and train stations (15 mins), Ware (50 mins) and Hertford (55 mins). Request to jump off at Cherry Tree Rise, Walkern.
It’s then about a 75-minute walk via Cromer Windmill to Cottered.
By bus and foot via Great Ashby (Stevenage PlusBus tickets VALID)
Bus SB7 runs frequently to the edge of Stevenage. Buses leave from Stevenage bus station, near the train station. The journey takes about 20 minutes. Request to jump off at The Beacons in Great Ashby.
It’s then about a 90-minute walk via Cromer Windmill to Cottered.
By bus via Buntingford (NO PlusBus tickets)
There are direct buses to Buntingford from: Bishop’s Stortford (30 mins), Hertford & Ware (40 mins) and Royston (20 mins).
Bus 37 runs a few times per day (none on Sundays) to Cottered village. The journey takes about 5 minutes. Otherwise, it’s about a 60-minute walk to Cottered.
By train and bus via Stevenage or Baldock
There are direct trains to Stevenage and Baldock from:
- London: Alexandra Palace (30 mins), Blackfriars (35 mins), East Croydon (55 mins), Farringdon (30 mins), Finsbury Park (20 mins), Kings Cross or St Pancras International (20 mins), London Bridge (45 mins).
- Hertfordshire: Hitchin (5 mins), Potters Bar (20 mins).
- Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire: Cambridge (35 mins), Royston (20 mins).
- Sussex & Surrey: Brighton (105 mins), Gatwick Airport (75 mins), Haywards Heath (90 mins), Three Bridges (75 mins).
There are direct trains to Stevenage from:
- London: Drayton Park (55 mins), Enfield (30 mins), Hornsey (45 mins).
- Hertfordshire: Hertford North (15 mins).
